Extension of Ganga Expressway from Meerut to Haridwar.
Location
The proposed project extends from Meerut in Uttar Pradesh to Haridwar, traversing through western Uttar Pradesh and entering Uttarakhand. The alignment is envisaged broadly along the Ganga River corridor, providing seamless connectivity between the plains and the foothills.
Background and Problem Statement
At present, connectivity between Meerut and Haridwar is primarily through existing national highways, which experience heavy traffic congestion, especially during peak tourist and pilgrimage seasons. The high volume of passenger and freight traffic results in delays, increased travel time, and safety concerns. The absence of a high-speed corridor limits efficient regional connectivity.
Project Concept and Need
The project is conceptualized as an extension of the high-speed Ganga Expressway to provide seamless, access-controlled connectivity up to Haridwar. The need is to reduce travel time, improve logistics efficiency, and cater to increasing traffic demand, particularly for tourism and pilgrimage. It will also strengthen inter-state connectivity between Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
Key Components and Features
The project envisages development of a greenfield, access-controlled expressway (generally 6-lane, expandable to 8-lane) with high design speed. It includes construction of interchanges, flyovers, ROBs, bridges, and wayside amenities. Special provisions may include major bridges across the Ganga River and grade-separated crossings. The alignment will be planned to minimize environmental and social impacts while ensuring optimal connectivity to major towns.
Expected Benefits and Outcomes
The extension will significantly reduce travel time between Meerut and Haridwar and decongest existing highways. It will improve freight movement efficiency, boost tourism and pilgrimage traffic, and enhance regional economic development. The project will also provide a safer, high-speed travel corridor and strengthen connectivity to Uttarakhand.
Current Status of the Project
The project is currently at the conceptual and planning stage. Preliminary alignment studies and feasibility assessments are being explored. Further steps such as detailed project report (DPR), land acquisition, and statutory clearances will be undertaken after finalization of alignment and approval from concerned authorities.
Conclusion
The extension of the Ganga Expressway up to Haridwar is a strategically important infrastructure initiative. Once implemented, it will provide seamless high-speed connectivity, reduce congestion on existing routes, and support economic and tourism growth in both Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand
