Construction 4-Lane Shyampur–Gumaniwala Bypass (1.3 Km) with Gumaniwala ROB, Rishikesh Uttarakhand
Location
The proposed project is located in the Rishikesh–Haridwar region of Uttarakhand, connecting Shyampur to Gumaniwala. The bypass has a total length of approximately 1.30 km and is planned as a 4-lane carriageway. A key component of the project is the construction of a Railway Over Bridge (ROB) at Gumaniwala to replace the existing railway level crossing. The alignment is designed to bypass congested settlement areas and provide uninterrupted connectivity across the railway line while minimizing land acquisition and environmental disturbance.
Background and Problem Statement
The existing Shyampur–Gumaniwala road serves as an important regional link carrying local, commuter, tourist, and interstate traffic. However, the presence of a railway level crossing at Gumaniwala results in frequent traffic interruptions due to train movements. Closure of the railway gate causes long vehicle queues on both sides, leading to delays, increased fuel consumption, and safety risks.
Rapid urban development in the surrounding areas, combined with steady growth in vehicular traffic, has worsened congestion levels. The existing road within settlement areas operates under mixed traffic conditions with limited carriageway width, roadside activities, and pedestrian movement. During peak tourist and pilgrimage seasons, traffic volumes increase significantly, further reducing the Level of Service and travel reliability.
Project Concept and Need
To address these issues, a 1.30 km long, 4-lane bypass road along with a Railway Over Bridge at Gumaniwala has been proposed. The project aims to provide grade separation over the railway line and divert through traffic away from densely populated areas.
The need for the project arises from recurring congestion at the railway crossing, safety concerns due to traffic conflicts, and increasing traffic demand in the region. The proposed bypass will segregate through traffic from local traffic, ensuring smoother and more efficient movement along the corridor.
Key Components and Features
The project includes construction of a 4-lane bypass road of approximately 1.30 km length, designed as per IRC standards to accommodate present and future traffic volumes. A Railway Over Bridge (ROB) will be constructed at Gumaniwala in coordination with Railway authorities to eliminate stoppages at the existing level crossing.
Additional components include approach embankments, structural works, drainage systems, cross-drainage structures, and road safety measures such as crash barriers, signage, road markings, and lighting. The geometric design will ensure safe vehicular movement and improved operational efficiency.
Beneficiaries and Coverage
The project will benefit daily commuters traveling between Rishikesh, Haridwar, and surrounding regions. Residents of Shyampur and Gumaniwala will experience reduced congestion within settlement areas. Interstate transport operators, goods carriers, tourist vehicles, and pilgrimage traffic will also benefit from uninterrupted movement and improved travel conditions.
Expected Benefits and Outcomes
Upon completion, the bypass and ROB will eliminate delays caused by railway gate closures and provide continuous traffic flow across the railway line. Congestion within Gumaniwala settlement will reduce significantly, and road safety will improve due to removal of railway crossing conflict points.
The 4-lane configuration will enhance corridor capacity, reduce travel time, improve journey reliability, and lower fuel consumption and vehicular emissions. Overall Level of Service on the corridor will improve, supporting long-term regional development
Current Status of the Project
Preliminary surveys and feasibility assessments have been conducted. Preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR), including traffic analysis, structural design of the ROB, cost estimation, and land acquisition assessment, is underway. Coordination with Railway authorities for design approval and statutory clearances is in progress. The project will move toward implementation after administrative approval and funding sanction.
Conclusion
The proposed 1.30 km, 4-lane Shyampur–Gumaniwala Bypass with Gumaniwala ROB is a strategically important infrastructure initiative aimed at improving regional connectivity and eliminating railway crossing delays. By providing grade separation and diverting through traffic away from populated areas, the project will significantly enhance traffic efficiency, safety, and environmental sustainability while meeting the growing transportation needs of the region
