Construction of New 95.00 m Span Single Lane Steel Motor Bridge on Pakhi-Hyuna-Pokhni-Lanji to Dwing Motor Road across Alaknanda River under State Sector.
Location
The project is located in Chamoli District, Uttarakhand, under Badrinath Legislative Assembly Constituency.\ The proposed bridge site lies at Km 3 (XS 2/4-7) on Pakhi-Hyuna-Pokhni-Lanji to Dwing Motor Road.\ The project falls under the jurisdiction of Provincial Division, PWD Gopeshwar.
Background and Problem Statement
The Pakhi-Hyuna-Pokhni-Lanji to Dwing Motor Road serves as an important rural connectivity corridor in the hilly terrain of Chamoli district. At present, there is no permanent motorable bridge across the Alaknanda River at this location.
Seasonal water flow, high flood levels, and absence of a permanent crossing severely affect:
-
Year-round vehicular movement
-
Emergency services
-
Connectivity to Badrinath constituency villages
During monsoon and high discharge periods, communication gets completely disrupted, posing serious safety and socio-economic challenges.
Project Concept and Need
The project is conceived to provide a permanent, all-weather motorable bridge across the Alaknanda River.\ The proposed 95.00 m single-span Steel truss bridge will eliminate river crossing risks and ensure uninterrupted connectivity.
Key needs addressed:
-
Reliable access to remote habitations
-
Improved disaster resilience
-
Reduction in travel time and transport cost
-
Strategic connectivity in a sensitive Himalayan region
Key Components and Features
Structural Configuration- Single span 95.00 m steel truss bridge with RCC wall type abutments on both banks
High-Impact Features
-
Single-span configuration avoids obstruction to river flow
-
Steel truss enables erection without riverbed staging
-
Designed for high seismic and hydraulic forces
-
Suitable for difficult Himalayan terrain and logistics
Beneficiaries and Coverage
The project will directly benefit:
-
Residents of Pakhi, Hyuna, Pokhni, Lanji and nearby villages
-
School children, patients, and daily commuters
-
Emergency and disaster response services
Indirect beneficiaries include traders, transporters, and pilgrims travelling through the region.
Expected Benefits and Outcomes
-
Improved Connectivity: Year-round motorable access
-
Safety: Elimination of risky river crossings
-
Economic Growth: Better access to markets and services
-
Disaster Management: Reliable evacuation and relief route
-
Regional Development: Strengthening rural road network
Current Status of the Project
-
DPR Preparation in Progress: Including survey, soil testing, design & drawings
-
Proof Checked: Superstructure vetted from IIT Roorkee.

-
Land Status: No land acquisition involved
Implementation Plan / Next Steps
-
Administrative approval under State Sector
-
Financial sanction
-
Tendering and award of work
-
Construction period: approx. 12 months after sanction
Conclusion
The construction of the 95.00 m span steel motor bridge on Pakhi-Hyuna-Pokhni-Lanji to Dwing Motor Road is a critical infrastructure intervention for Chamoli district. The project will ensure safe, reliable and permanent connectivity across the Alaknanda River, contributing significantly to regional development and public welfare.
