Construction of 4-Lane Access Controlled Bypass for Dehradun on NH-307 from Jhajhra to Asharori.

Location

The project is located in Dehradun District, Uttarakhand. The proposed greenfield alignment starts from Jhajhra, connecting the Paonta Sahib–Ballupur section of NH-7, and terminates near Asharori Check Post, where it integrates with the Delhi–Dehradun Expressway on NH-307. The total length of the proposed bypass is approximately 12 km, forming an important southern-western corridor around Dehradun city.

Background and Problem Statement

Dehradun has witnessed rapid urban growth, expansion of residential areas, and development of industrial hubs such as Selaqui. Simultaneously, interstate traffic between Uttarakhand and neighbouring states including Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir has increased substantially. The existing roads are carrying both local city traffic and through traffic, resulting in congestion, delays, and higher pollution levels. The absence of a dedicated bypass corridor has led to traffic bottlenecks within city limits and reduced travel efficiency. Therefore, development of a new access-controlled bypass became necessary to divert non-destined traffic away from the city core.

Project Concept and Need

The project envisages the development of a 4-lane fully access-controlled greenfield bypass to function as a key segment of the proposed ring road around Dehradun. The need for the project arises from the requirement to provide seamless connectivity between NH-7 and NH-307, as well as direct linkage to the Delhi–Dehradun Expressway. The bypass is designed to facilitate high-speed, uninterrupted traffic movement while meeting future transportation demands for the next 50 to 100 years. It will strategically separate through traffic from city traffic, thereby enhancing mobility and safety.

Key Components and Features

The project consists of a 12 km long greenfield alignment developed as a 4-lane access-controlled highway. It provides direct connectivity between Saharanpur–Dehradun Road (old NH-72A / new NH-307) and Paonta Sahib–Dehradun Road (NH-7). The corridor is planned with full access control provisions to ensure safe and high-speed vehicular movement. It also establishes connectivity to the Delhi–Dehradun Expressway and facilitates improved access to Mussoorie and Selaqui Industrial Area. The design standards adopted ensure long-term sustainability and operational efficiency.

Expected Benefits and Outcomes

The proposed bypass will significantly decongest Dehradun city by diverting through traffic to the outer corridor. It will reduce vehicular pollution and improve overall traffic flow within the city. The project will enhance connectivity to industrial and commercial areas such as Selaqui and improve interstate movement towards Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir. Residents of Dehradun will benefit from reduced traffic pressure and improved road safety. The project will also strengthen the city’s infrastructure framework and support long-term urban development.

Current Status of the Project

The project is presently under construction. The overall physical progress achieved is 29.87%. Work is progressing as per schedule under the EPC mode of implementation.

Conclusion

The 4-lane Access Controlled Dehradun Bypass is a strategically important infrastructure initiative aimed at improving regional and interstate connectivity while decongesting the city of Dehradun. By integrating major national highways with the Delhi–Dehradun Expressway, the project will enhance traffic efficiency, promote economic growth, and contribute to sustainable urban transport planning. Upon completion, it will serve as a vital component of Dehradun’s long-term mobility and development strategy.
