Construction of Kaliasaur Bypass with 3 no. bridges (182.10 m, 250.00 m & 162.10 m)
Location
The Kaliasaur Bypass project is located on NH-07 (old NH-58) between Km 349.800 and Km 355.495 in the state of Uttarakhand. The bypass lies in the Kaliasaur–Sirobagar stretch, which is an important route connecting the Char Dham pilgrimage destinations, particularly Badrinath Dham and Kedarnath Dham.
Background and Problem Statement
The existing highway stretch near Sirobagar has been a chronic landslide-prone zone for more than 50 years. During the monsoon season, frequent landslides occur in this region, severely disrupting traffic movement. Since this highway serves as a major access route for pilgrims traveling to Badrinath Dham and Kedarnath Dham, such landslides often cause long traffic jams lasting several hours and increase the risk of accidents. Additionally, the sliding zone between Sirobagar and Khankhra frequently experiences debris flow during heavy rainfall, further obstructing traffic and creating unsafe travel conditions.
Project Concept and Need
The Kaliasaur Bypass is being constructed primarily to bypass the chronic landslide zone at Sirobagar and other vulnerable sections of the highway. The project aims to provide a safer and more reliable route for commuters and pilgrims by diverting traffic away from unstable and landslide-prone areas. This will ensure smoother, safer, and uninterrupted traffic movement on this important national highway.
Key Components and Features
- Construction of a 2-lane highway with paved shoulders.
- Development of the Kaliasaur Bypass with a total length of about 3.22 km.
- Construction of three major bridges with lengths of 182.10 m, 250.00 m, and 162.10 m.
- Strengthening and improvement of the existing highway stretch.
- Engineering works designed to improve safety and ensure reliable connectivity in landslide-prone terrain.
Beneficiaries and Coverage
The project will benefit pilgrims traveling to Char Dham shrines, particularly Badrinath Dham and Kedarnath Dham. It will also benefit local residents, transport operators, and businesses in the surrounding areas by improving road connectivity and reducing travel disruptions. Improved accessibility will promote tourism, support local economic activities, and create employment opportunities.
Current Status of the Project
The total project cost is ₹148.021 Crore. The project commenced on 16.01.2018 and is being implemented under EPC mode. The scheduled date of completion is 31.12.2026. Construction activities including road development and bridge works are currently in progress.
Conclusion
The Kaliasaur Bypass project is a significant infrastructure initiative aimed at addressing the long-standing landslide problems along this section of the national highway. Once completed, the bypass will greatly enhance road safety, reduce traffic congestion, and ensure smoother and more reliable travel for pilgrims and commuters. It will also strengthen connectivity to the Char Dham pilgrimage sites and contribute to regional tourism and economic development in Uttarakhand.
