Upgradation of 2-Lane with Paved Shoulder from Paligad to Jankichatti on NH-134 in District Uttarkashi.
Location
The project is located on NH-134 from Paligad to Jankichatti (Km 195.175 to Km 220.000) in District Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand. This stretch forms the final section of the Dharasu Bend to Yamunotri Highway, which connects to the famous Yamunotri Dham pilgrimage site and is an important part of the Char Dham route.
Background and Problem Statement
The existing highway stretch carries significant traffic, especially during the Char Dham pilgrimage season. Due to the mountainous terrain, presence of sharp curves, inadequate drainage, and deterioration of pavement over time, the road requires rehabilitation and improvement. Frequent landslides and water-related pavement damage also create safety risks for commuters. Therefore, upgrading this highway section is necessary to ensure safe, smooth, and reliable connectivity.
Project Concept and Need
The project aims to upgrade and rehabilitate the existing highway to a two-lane configuration with paved shoulders. The work includes widening and strengthening of the carriageway, improving horizontal and vertical alignment by easing sharp curves, construction of realignment sections, and rehabilitation of the pavement structure. Proper drainage systems such as side drains and cross-drainage structures will be provided to prevent water damage. Considering the challenging hilly terrain, slope stabilization measures including retaining walls, breast walls, and protective structures will be constructed to minimize landslide risks. Additionally, road safety measures such as crash barriers, road signage, road markings, and traffic control devices will be installed at critical locations.
Key Components and Features
- Widening and strengthening of the existing carriageway to a two-lane configuration with paved shoulders.
- Improvement of horizontal and vertical alignment.
- Construction of 01 major bridge and 02 minor bridges.
- Strengthening of the pavement structure.
- Construction of cross drainage works and culverts.
- Installation of road safety furniture and safety measures as per IRC and MoRTH guidelines.
Beneficiaries and Coverage
The project will benefit pilgrims traveling to Yamunotri Dham, tourists, and local residents of Uttarkashi district. Improved road connectivity will support local businesses such as hotels, restaurants, shops, and transport services. The project will also contribute to regional economic growth by increasing tourism and generating employment opportunities along the highway corridor.
Current Status of the Project
The total project cost is ₹344.73 Crore. The widening and upgradation work commenced in October 2025 with a total project duration of 30 months, and the targeted completion date is April 2028. As of February 2026, approximately 18% of the work has been completed, and the overall progress of the project is satisfactory.
Conclusion
The rehabilitation and upgradation of the NH-134 Paligad to Jankichatti stretch is a significant infrastructure project aimed at improving road safety, travel efficiency, and connectivity to Yamunotri Dham. Once completed, the project will facilitate safer travel for pilgrims and tourists, strengthen local economic activities, and enhance transportation through the challenging mountainous terrain of Uttarakhand.
