Development of 4-Lane Ramnagar Bypass as part of NH-121 (New NH-309)
Location
The project is located in the vicinity of Ramnagar in Uttarakhand along National Highway 309 (India) (Old NH-121). The proposed bypass starts near Nayagaon Telipura at Km 24+000, passes through Belgarh, crosses the Kosi River, and merges with NH-309 near Aamdanda, Ramnagar close to the Uttarakhand Forest Development Corporation depot.
Background and Problem Statement
The project road forms part of NH-121 (New NH-309) with a total consultancy length of 28.000 km. However, alignment approval from the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has been granted only for the stretch Km 0.000 to Km 24.000. The remaining section from Km 24.000 to Km 28.000 requires a new bypass alignment. The existing connectivity near Ramnagar faces traffic pressure, especially at the bridge location where current traffic volume is about 5957 PCU (2024–25). Increasing traffic demand and movement toward tourist destinations and adjoining districts necessitate an improved bypass facility to ensure smoother and safer traffic movement.
Project Concept and Need
The project aims to develop a Greenfield bypass corridor to divert through-traffic away from the congested Ramnagar area and provide an efficient alternative alignment. Traffic analysis indicates that the volume is expected to increase to 6564 PCU by 2026–27 with an estimated 5% CAGR, indicating the need for a higher-capacity corridor. To address future traffic demand and regional connectivity requirements, augmentation options were evaluated and an optimal 4-lane bypass configuration has been proposed.
Key Components and Features
- Proposed 4-Lane Bypass to accommodate future traffic demand.
- Bypass alignment starting at Km 24.000 near Nayagaon Telipura and merging at Km 28.000 near Aamdanda, Ramnagar.
- Total bypass length: 4.00 km (existing corridor) / 8.480 km (proposed alignment).
- Crossing of Kosi River with required bridge infrastructure.
- Development as a Greenfield highway section with improved geometric standards.
- Provision of drainage structures, safety barriers, signage, and other highway amenities as per MoRTH standards.
- Integration with the already approved alignment between Km 0.000 and Km 24.000.
Beneficiaries and Coverage
The project will benefit residents and road users in Ramnagar and adjoining regions, including traffic travelling towards tourism and forest areas around the foothills of the Himalayas. It will improve regional connectivity, reduce congestion within Ramnagar town, and enhance safety and travel efficiency for passenger and freight vehicles.
Current Status of the Project
Alignment for the project road has been approved by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways on 18 January 2022 for the stretch Km 0.000 to Km 24.000. Following site visits and discussions, it was finalized that the Final DPR shall be prepared for Km 5.735 to Km 24.000, with a design length of 18.265 km. For the remaining section Km 24.000 to Km 28.000, a separate bypass proposal has been prepared and submitted to Ministry for approval.
Conclusion
The proposed Ramnagar Bypass will play an important role in strengthening the highway network along NH-309 by providing a high-capacity corridor for future traffic demand. The project will reduce congestion, improve travel safety, and support economic and tourism development in the region, while ensuring seamless connectivity across the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand.
