Widening to 2 Lane with Paved Shoulder from Existing Chainage Chainage 12.000 (Badhwala) to Chainage 110.040 (Barkot Bend) on NH-507 in the State of Uttarakhand
Location
The project corridor is located on National Highway-507 in the State of Uttarakhand and extends from Badhwala (Km 12.00) to Barkot Bend (Km 110.040). The alignment passes through hilly and mountainous terrain of Dehradun and Uttarkashi districts, connecting important towns and settlements such as Nainbag, Diyarikhad, Damta, Naugaon and Barkot, and serves as a vital regional connectivity corridor.

Background and Problem Statement
NH-507 is an important arterial route in the hilly region of Uttarakhand, providing connectivity to remote habitations, pilgrimage centres and tourist destinations. The existing road along major stretches is predominantly single/intermediate lane with inadequate carriageway width, sharp horizontal curves, steep gradients and poor sight distance.
The corridor is prone to landslides, slope failures and drainage-related pavement damage due to heavy rainfall and fragile geology. These deficiencies result in low operating speeds, safety hazards, frequent traffic disruptions and increased vehicle operating costs. With the gradual growth in traffic, tourism and regional economic activities, the present road configuration has become inadequate to cater to current and future transportation demand.
Project Concept and Need
The project has been conceptualized to upgrade the entire corridor from Chainage 12.000 to Chainage 110.040 to a standard two-lane carriageway with paved shoulders in accordance with IRC and MoRTH specifications. The improvement aims to ensure uniform riding quality, enhanced safety and reliable all-weather connectivity.
The project includes widening and strengthening of the existing carriageway, realignments at critical locations, geometric improvements, slope stabilization measures, and provision of adequate drainage and road safety features. The corridor-level development will ensure continuity with completed, ongoing and proposed DPR-based packages on NH-507.
Key Components and Features
- Widening of existing carriageway to two lanes with paved shoulders
- Improvement of horizontal and vertical geometry, including easing of sharp curves and steep gradients
- Construction of realignment stretches wherever required for improved safety and riding comfort
- Pavement strengthening and rehabilitation of distressed stretches
- Provision of drainage works including side drains and cross-drainage structures
- Slope protection and stabilization works such as retaining walls, breast walls and other protective measures in landslide-prone areas
- Road safety measures including crash barriers, signage, road markings and other traffic control devices
Beneficiaries and Coverage
The project will benefit local residents, commercial transport operators, tourists, pilgrims and emergency services. It will improve access to markets, healthcare, education and administrative facilities for the population residing along the corridor, while also supporting tourism and regional economic development.
Current Status of the Project
(a) DPR Under Preparation
- Consultancy services for development of 2-lane with paved shoulder from Chainage 106.545 to Chainage 110.040 (Barkot to Barkot Bend) on NH-507.
(b) DPR Submitted
- 2-lane with paved shoulder from Chainage 12.00 to Chainage 40.500 (Badhwala to Lakhwar Bend) on NH-507. The DPR was submitted to the Ministry by the Regional Office on 15.01.2026. Land acquisition and forest clearance processes have been initiated in accordance with statutory provisions.
- 2-lane with paved shoulder from existing chainage Km 53.873 to Km 59.700 (Kharsunkyari to Nainbag) on NH-507. The DPR has been submitted to the Ministry for appraisal and further necessary action.
(c) Running Works (Under EPC Mode) The following stretches of NH-507 are under execution through EPC contracts, aimed at progressive upgradation of the corridor to a standard two-lane configuration:
- Balance work of widening to two lane from Chainage 61.000 to Chainage 64.825 (Marod near Nainbagh to Diyarikhad)
- Widening from single lane to two lane from Chainage 64.525 to Chainage 74.700 (Diyarikhad–Damta–Thatri Khadd)
- Widening to two lane from existing chainage Chainage 74.700 to Chainage 100.660 (Rikhau Khadd to Naugaon) corresponding to design chainage Chainage 53.365 to Chainage 78.785
- Widening to two lane from Chainage 100.660 to Chainage 106.540 (Naugaon to Barkot)
The above bifurcation demonstrates the phased development of NH-507 through DPR finalization, consultancy assignments and active construction works, contributing to systematic corridor upgradation.
Conclusion
The proposed widening and realignment of the Badhwala to Barkot Bend section of NH-507 is a vital infrastructure initiative that will significantly improve safety, efficiency and reliability of the highway corridor. The project aligns with broader objectives of enhancing regional connectivity, supporting socio-economic development and developing resilient highway infrastructure in the challenging hilly terrain of Uttarakhand.
