Improvement and Strengthening of Bypass Motor Road of NH-107A (Chamoli–Mandal–Ukhimath Kund Section) from Km 5 (Pokhari Bend) to Km 25 (Herbal Research & Development Institute, Mandal), under Development Block Dasholi of District Chamoli.

Location

The project is situated in District Chamoli, Uttarakhand, under Block Dasholi, falling within the Badrinath Legislative Assembly Constituency and the Pauri Garhwal Lok Sabha Constituency. The proposed bypass forms part of the NH-107A corridor and passes near the urban limits of Gopeshwar.

Background and Problem Statement

The existing traffic movement on NH-107A passes through the urban area of Gopeshwar, resulting in congestion, delay, and safety concerns. The lack of an alternative route restricts smooth traffic flow, especially during peak hours and adverse weather conditions. Hence, the need was felt for development of a bypass motor road.

Project Concept and Need

The project has been conceived to improve and strengthen an alternative bypass route connecting Pokhari Bend to the Herbal Research and Development Institute. The objective is to divert through-traffic away from the town area, reduce traffic load on NH-107A and provide a reliable alternative route for vehicular movement.

Key Components and Features

  • Road Improvement & Formation: Upgrading of existing road geometry to ensure proper width and riding quality.
  • Pavement Strengthening: Application of Dense Bituminous Macadam (DBM) and Bituminous Concrete (BC) to provide a durable and smooth riding surface
  • Retaining / Breast Walls: Construction of protective structures to ensure slope stability in hilly terrain.
  • Drainage Works: Provision of surface drains and cross drainage works for effective disposal of rainwater.
  • Road Safety Infrastructure: Installation of Crash Barriers, Road Signage and other safety features to ensure safe vehicular movement.

Beneficiaries and Coverage

The project will result in the following benefits:

  • The bypass road will significantly reduce traffic congestion within the urban area of Gopeshwar, the district headquarters, thereby improving traffic flow, safety, and overall urban mobility for a population of approximately 30,000 residents.
  • The project will directly benefit more than 5,000 residents of nearby villages (Palsari, Bamiyala, Bandwara etc) and surrounding habitations by improving road connectivity, enhancing access to essential services, and supporting socio-economic development.
  • The improved alignment will also facilitate tourism development by providing a safer, shorter, more convenient, and scenic travel route, thereby improving accessibility for pilgrims and tourists and enhancing the overall travel experience in the region.

Expected Benefits and Outcomes

  • Improved Connectivity: Year-round motorable access
  • Safety: Elimination of risky river crossings
  • Economic Growth: Better access to markets and services
  • Disaster Management: Reliable evacuation and relief route
  • Regional Development: Strengthening rural road network

Present Status of the Project

  • DPR Preparation in Progress: Approx Cost ₹ 9.84 Cr.
  • Land Status : The land is already under the possession of the Public Works Department (PWD), as it involves the strengthening of a pre-existing road.

Implementation Plan / Next Steps

  • Administrative approval under State Sector
  • Financial sanction
  • Tendering and award of work
  • Construction period: approx. 12 months after sanction

Conclusion

The proposed improvement and strengthening of the bypass motor road will play a vital role in decongesting NH-107A near Gopeshwar, improving regional connectivity, and supporting sustainable urban and tourism development in District Chamoli.
