Construction & Upgradation of Existing Road to 2-Lane with Paved Shoulder including Joshimath Bypass. (Length: 6.35 Km)
Location
The project is located in Chamoli District, Uttarakhand, on NH-07 (Old NH-58). The stretch includes the Joshimath Bypass, which forms a critical segment of the Char Dham route.
Background and Problem Statement
Joshimath is an important town on the Char Dham pilgrimage route and serves as a gateway to Badrinath. The existing road passing through Joshimath town experiences severe congestion, particularly during peak yatra season. The existing alignment is constrained by:
- Narrow carriageway and inadequate shoulder width.
- Heavy pilgrimage and tourist traffic.
- Urban congestion within Joshimath town.
- Landslide-prone terrain affecting road safety and reliability.
These issues result in increased travel time, safety risks, and operational inefficiencies
Project Concept and Need
The project has been conceptualized to develop a 2-lane highway with paved shoulders along a bypass alignment to:
- Divert through traffic away from Joshimath town.
- Improve geometric standards and riding quality.
- Enhance safety in landslide-prone stretches.
- Provide a reliable and all-weather road infrastructure on the Char Dham corridor.
The bypass is aimed at ensuring smooth and uninterrupted movement of pilgrims and strategic traffic.
Key Components and Features
- Development of 2-Lane Highway with Paved Shoulders (NHDL configuration).
- Construction of protection works and cross-drainage structures.
- Construction of 288-meter MSE Wall (Mechanically Stabilized Earth Wall).
- Landslide mitigation and slope stabilization works.
- Total Project Length: 6.35 Km.
Expected Benefits and Outcomes
- Reduction of approximately 14.70 km in travel length through the bypass alignment.
- Decongestion of traffic within Joshimath town.
- Improved travel time, especially during peak pilgrimage season.
- Enhanced road safety and riding comfort.
- Increased resilience against landslides and natural hazards.
- Strengthening of connectivity to Badrinath and other Char Dham destinations.
Current Status of the Project
- Project Mode: EPC
- Physical Progress: 32.20%
- Status: Work in Progress
Conclusion
The Joshimath Bypass project on NH-07 is a strategically significant intervention under the Char Dham connectivity network. By improving road geometry, enhancing safety measures, and diverting traffic away from congested urban areas, the project will play a vital role in ensuring safe, efficient, and sustainable mobility for pilgrims, tourists, and local residents. Upon completion, it will substantially improve traffic management and regional connectivity in the Himalayan terrain of Uttarakhand.
