Construction of Champawat Bypass (2-Lane with Paved Shoulder).

Location

The project is located in Champawat district of Uttarakhand along National Highway 9 (India), covering a stretch from Km. 121.700 to Km. 129.450. The bypass is intended to divert through traffic away from the congested Champawat town area.

Background and Problem Statement

The existing highway alignment passes through Champawat town, where narrow road width, mixed traffic movement, and roadside activities lead to frequent congestion, delays, and safety concerns. The increasing traffic volume on NH-09, which is an important regional corridor connecting Kumaon region with neighboring states, has further aggravated these issues. The existing alignment also restricts smooth movement of long-distance and commercial vehicles.

Project Concept and Need

The project has been conceived to provide a bypass around Champawat town to ensure smooth and uninterrupted movement of traffic. Development of a 2-lane carriageway with paved shoulders will enhance road capacity, reduce travel time, and improve safety. The bypass will also reduce traffic pressure within the town and facilitate efficient connectivity to nearby hill districts and pilgrimage routes under the Char Dham connectivity improvement initiatives.

Key Components and Features

  • Construction of 2-lane highway with paved shoulders for improved capacity and safety.
  • Total project length of 7.75 km (Km. 121.700 – Km. 129.450).
  • Development under Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) mode.
  • Provision of necessary bridges, culverts, drainage systems, and protective works considering the hilly terrain.
  • Installation of road safety measures, signage, and crash barriers as per MoRTH standards.
  • Designed to improve geometric standards and ensure smooth traffic flow bypassing Champawat town.

Beneficiaries and Coverage

The project will benefit residents of Champawat, nearby villages, and road users travelling through the Kumaon region. It will facilitate better connectivity for passenger vehicles, commercial transport, and tourism traffic, while reducing congestion and pollution within the town. Local businesses and tourism activities are also expected to gain from improved highway connectivity.

Current Status of the Project

The project commenced on 01 January 2026 with a scheduled completion date of 31 December 2027. The estimated project cost is ₹220.88 Crore. The work is being executed under the EPC mode as part of national highway development initiatives to improve connectivity and road safety in Uttarakhand.

Conclusion

The Champawat Bypass project is an important infrastructure initiative aimed at improving highway mobility and safety on NH-09. Upon completion, the bypass will decongest Champawat town, enhance regional connectivity, and support economic and tourism development in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand.
