Upgradation and 4-Laning of Haridwar Bypass .
Location
The project is situated in Haridwar District of Uttarakhand. The proposed bypass originates at Km 188+100 of NH-58 and terminates at Km 5+100 of NH-74, forming a vital peripheral connectivity corridor around Haridwar city and linking two important National Highways
Background and Problem Statement
Haridwar is one of the most prominent religious and pilgrimage centers in India, attracting millions of devotees annually. The city experiences intense traffic pressure throughout the year, particularly during major religious gatherings such as Kumbh Mela and Kanwar Yatra. The existing road network passing through the urban core was inadequate to accommodate the growing volume of local, interstate, and pilgrimage traffic. Through traffic moving within city limits led to severe congestion, longer travel times, higher vehicle operating costs, road safety concerns, and traffic management challenges during peak seasons. In view of these issues, the development of a dedicated bypass corridor was considered essential to divert non-destined traffic away from the city.
Project Concept and Need
The project envisages the development of a four-lane greenfield bypass designed to decongest Haridwar city and provide seamless regional connectivity between NH-58 and NH-74. The bypass aims to facilitate uninterrupted movement of long-distance vehicles, separate through traffic from local traffic, and improve overall travel efficiency. Additionally, the project supports future urban expansion and industrial development in peripheral areas. The corridor has been designed to cater to future traffic growth while ensuring safe, efficient, and sustainable mobility.
Key Components and Features
The project includes major civil structures and grade-separated facilities to ensure seamless traffic flow:
- Major Bridges 1 No. (56 × 45 m) over River Ganga and 1 No. (3 × 30 m) over Storm Water Drain
- Railway Over Bridge (ROB) 1 No. (15 + 36 + 15 m) over Laksar–Haridwar Main Line
- Flyover 1 No. (36 + 40 + 36 + 36 m) over NH-58
- Vehicular Underpasses (VUP) 6 Nos. (Cumulative length: 320 m)
- Light Vehicular Underpasses (LVUP) 6 Nos. (Cumulative length: 87 m)
- Small Vehicular Underpasses (SVUP) 5 Nos. (Cumulative length: 36 m)
Total Project Length: 15.10 Km (4-Lane Configuration)
Expected Benefits and Outcomes
Upon completion, the bypass will significantly reduce congestion within Haridwar city and improve travel time and operational efficiency for highway users. It will ensure smoother movement of pilgrimage traffic and provide an alternate route during major religious events. The project will enhance road safety by separating through traffic from local traffic and will contribute to economic development by facilitating industrial growth and urban expansion. Overall, it will strengthen regional connectivity and improve the quality of transportation infrastructure in the area.
Current Status of the Project
The project is currently under progress with a physical progress of 72.20% and financial progress of 79.35%. The target completion date is 01.04.2026. There are no major issues affecting project implementation at present.
Conclusion
The Haridwar Bypass Package–I is a strategically important infrastructure initiative aimed at decongesting one of India’s most significant pilgrimage cities. By providing a modern four-lane bypass with adequate grade separation and structural provisions, the project will ensure efficient traffic management, improved safety, and enhanced connectivity. Once completed, it will serve as a long-term sustainable solution for handling present and future traffic demands while supporting the socio-economic growth of the region.
