Construction of 4 lane from from 2 lane from chainage 15.000 to chainage 61.500 (Purkaji–Laksar–Haridwar) on NH-334A in the state of Uttarakhand.

Location

The project involves consultancy services for the four-laning of National Highway-334A from Km 15.00 to Km 61.50, covering the Purkaji–Laksar–Haridwar section in the state of Uttarakhand. This corridor forms an important part of the regional and national highway network, providing vital connectivity between urban centers, industrial areas, agricultural regions, and the pilgrimage city of Haridwar, while also linking with major arterial routes in the state.

Background and Problem Statement

The existing stretch of NH-334A carries substantial traffic comprising passenger vehicles, commercial transport, and local traffic generated by residential, industrial, and agricultural activities along the corridor. With rapid urbanization, industrial growth, and increasing regional and through traffic, the present highway configuration has become inadequate to cater to current and projected traffic demand. The limited carriageway width, frequent at-grade intersections, mixed traffic conditions, and roadside developments contribute to congestion, reduced travel speeds, safety concerns, and increased vehicle operating costs, particularly during peak hours and festival seasons.

In view of the growing traffic volumes and the strategic importance of the Purkaji–Laksar–Haridwar corridor, the project has been conceptualized to upgrade the existing highway to a four-lane configuration in accordance with applicable IRC and MoRTH standards. The consultancy services are intended to provide comprehensive planning, detailed engineering, and project preparation support to facilitate capacity augmentation, improve operational efficiency, and enhance safety for all categories of road users. The proposed four-laning will ensure smoother traffic flow, improved level of service, and reliable all-weather connectivity.

Project Concept and Need

The scope of consultancy services includes detailed topographic surveys, traffic studies, geometric design, pavement design, and preparation of Detailed Project Report. It also encompasses improvement of horizontal and vertical alignment, design of junctions and access control measures, drainage planning including side drains and cross-drainage structures, and development of road safety features such as medians, crash barriers, signage, markings, and traffic control devices. The consultancy assignment further includes preparation of cost estimates, bid documents, and assistance during statutory clearances such as land acquisition and environmental approvals, as required.

Key Components and Features

The project is expected to benefit a wide range of stakeholders including local residents, daily commuters, commercial and freight operators, industrial units, and pilgrims traveling to Haridwar. Improved highway capacity and safety will facilitate efficient movement of goods and passengers, support regional economic development, and enhance access to employment, education, healthcare, and markets in the surrounding areas.

Beneficiaries and Coverage

Upon completion of the four-laning project, significant improvements are anticipated in terms of reduced travel time, enhanced road safety, lower vehicle operating costs, and improved travel comfort. The upgraded NH-334A corridor will play a crucial role in strengthening the transport infrastructure of Uttarakhand by improving connectivity between key economic and religious centers and supporting sustainable regional growth.

Current Status of the Project

At present, activities related to preparation of the Detailed Project Report are undergoing. Following approval of the DPR by the competent authority, the project will proceed to tendering, award of work, and commencement of construction. In parallel, land acquisition and forest clearance processes will be initiated and pursued in accordance with statutory requirements to ensure timely implementation of the project.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the proposed consultancy services for four-laning of NH-334A from Purkaji to Haridwar represent a critical step towards capacity enhancement and modernization of this important highway corridor. The project aligns with the objectives of improving regional connectivity, promoting economic development, and ensuring safe, efficient, and sustainable transportation infrastructure in the state of Uttarakhand.
