Rehabilitation and Upgradation of NH-309A (Udiyari Bend to Almora)
Location
The project corridor is situated in the Kumaon region of the State of Uttarakhand and forms part of National Highway (NH)-309A. The alignment traverses predominantly through hilly, mountainous, and geologically sensitive terrain, providing vital connectivity to the districts of Almora, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh. The corridor serves as a critical link for socio-economic development, strategic movement, and regional accessibility in the remote areas of Kumaon.

Background and Problem Statement
NH-309A is an important feeder corridor in the Kumaon region, providing connectivity to remote, border, and strategically significant areas of Uttarakhand. The existing carriageway is substandard in terms of width, geometric design, and pavement condition, leading to traffic bottlenecks, safety hazards, and operational inefficiencies. The corridor accommodates mixed traffic, including passenger vehicles, freight carriers, public transport, and defence logistics movement.
Inadequate carriageway width, sharp curves, deficient camber, poor drainage, and deteriorated pavement have adversely impacted travel time, safety, and reliability of connectivity. The highway also serves as a crucial access route to religious and tourist destinations, as well as border areas, thereby necessitating urgent rehabilitation and upgradation in line with MoRTH and IRC standards.
Project Concept and Need
The project has been conceptualized for the rehabilitation and upgradation of the existing single/intermediate lane highway to a standard two-lane configuration with paved shoulders, as per MoRTH specifications.
The primary objectives of the project are:
- To improve road safety through geometric improvements and safety features,
- To reduce travel time and vehicle operating costs,
- To ensure all-weather, reliable, and resilient connectivity,
- To support socio-economic development in the region, and
- To strengthen strategic and defence logistics movement.
Considering the corridor's strategic, religious, and economic significance, the project is of high priority under the Uttarakhand State Master Plan for National Highway development.

Key Components and Features
The project involves the following key components :
- Widening of the existing carriageway to a standard two-lane configuration,
- Geometric improvements at critical stretches and Improvement of junctions and intersections.
- Construction and improvement of cross-drainage structures,
- Installation of road safety features including crash barriers, road markings, and signage,
- Provision of retaining walls, breast walls, and slope protection measures in landslide-prone areas,
Beneficiaries and Coverage
NH-309A serves as a lifeline corridor connecting Almora, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh districts of Kumaon. It facilitates the movement of essential commodities such as food grains, construction materials, petroleum products, and daily necessities to remote hill settlements. The highway functions as a feeder route to NH-09 (Tanakpur-Pithoragarh-Askot) at Ghat, which is a strategically important corridor leading towards the Indo-China border. The project will significantly enhance mobility for defence personnel and logistics, particularly for the Kumaon Regiment Headquarters at Ranikhet.
Additionally, the corridor supports religious tourism, including access to routes associated with the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. The proposed upgradation will improve road user safety, boost local economic activity, promote tourism, and enhance overall regional connectivity.
Current Status of the Project

Conclusion
The rehabilitation and upgradation of NH-309A to a standard two-lane configuration is a critical infrastructure intervention aimed at enhancing connectivity, road safety, and economic development in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. The project holds significant strategic, socio-economic, and religious importance and will contribute to improved mobility, defence preparedness, and accessibility to remote and border areas. Expeditious resolution of forest clearance and completion of tendering formalities will facilitate timely commencement of construction and ensure realization of the project's intended benefits.
