Four Laning of Rampur to Kathgodam (Km 43.446 to Km 93.226 Of NH 87)
Location
The project is situated in the State of Uttarakhand, covering a length of 49.78 km on National Highway 87 between Rampur and Kathgodam. This corridor serves as an important link connecting the plains with the hilly regions and acts as a major route for passenger and freight movement towards Kumaon region.
Background and Problem Statement
The existing stretch of the highway was predominantly two-lane with limited capacity and substandard geometric features. With a steady increase in traffic volume, particularly tourist and commercial vehicles, the corridor experienced congestion, delays, and increased accident risk. The inadequate road width and lack of proper infrastructure necessitated capacity augmentation to ensure safe, efficient, and uninterrupted traffic movement.
Project Concept and Need
The project was conceived to upgrade the existing highway into a four-lane divided carriageway to cater to present and future traffic demand. The need was driven by increasing vehicular load, economic growth in the region, and the strategic importance of the route for connectivity to hill districts. The upgraded facility aims to provide improved riding quality, enhanced safety features, and reduced travel time, while supporting regional development and tourism.
Key Components and Features
The project includes four-laning of 49.78 km stretch with provision of divided carriageway, paved shoulders, and improved geometric design. It involves strengthening and widening of existing pavement, construction of bridges, culverts, and drainage works, as well as development of road safety features such as signage, markings, and crash barriers. The total sanctioned project cost is ₹560.10 crore. The project was implemented under the aegis of National Highways Authority of India, ensuring adherence to national highway standards and specifications.
Expected Benefits and Outcomes
Upon completion, the project significantly enhances the carrying capacity of the corridor, leading to smoother traffic flow and reduced congestion. Travel time between Rampur and Kathgodam has been reduced, and road safety has improved due to better alignment and infrastructure. The project also boosts regional connectivity, supports tourism in Uttarakhand, and contributes to economic growth by facilitating efficient movement of goods and passengers.
Current Status of the Project
The project commenced on 28.10.2017 with an initial target completion date of 27.10.2019, which was subsequently revised to 01.04.2025. The entire stretch of 49.78 km has been completed (100% physical progress achieved). At present, the project is in the maintenance phase, and routine upkeep activities are being carried out to ensure sustained performance of the highway.
Conclusion
The project has been successfully completed within the revised timeline, resulting in a modern, high-capacity highway corridor. It has addressed previous issues of congestion and safety, and now serves as a vital infrastructure asset for the region, enhancing connectivity and supporting socio-economic development.
